Record Your Songs at Big Horse

Recording engineer, Andy Moore, can partner with you on your project in many ways, from full recording of albums or singles, mixing songs recorded elsewhere, or finishing songs started in your home studio. He can also record a live-in-the-studio session and can arrange for videography to capture a live performance in a studio environment. Due to our remote location, we also offer unique outdoor recording when the weather permits. The studio has mobile options to record at your location or a rented space, such as a church’s pipe organ, a concert hall with a choral ensemble, or concert venue for a live performance. If you want to record your favorite grand piano, we can bring high resolution microphones and preamps to your location and capture your performance there.

Recording Equipment

The studio has a diverse collection of high-quality microphones to best capture acoustic instruments such as voice, drum kits, acoustic guitar, horns, strings and piano, as well as amplified instruments like electric guitar, electric bass, organs and electric pianos. We offer a variety of classic guitar amplifiers and have access to more options. If you have an amplifier that you love, you are highly encouraged to bring it to the studio and we will capture its sound in high definition for your recording. As a standard practice, all electric guitar and bass takes are captured in parallel through a transparent DI for optional reamplification or amp modeling. This option allows for more freedom in the mixing process if the song calls for different sounds as the recording progresses.

The studio also has an industry standard Nord Electro 6D keyboard which has legendary Hammond B3, pipe organ, acoustic piano, Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos and a variety of synthesizers. The midi capabilities of the Nord allow for very efficient performance corrections for pianists who may not have their parts completely fleshed out when recording begins. We have multiple drum configurations with our vintage Ludwig kit, ranging from the giant Bonham sizes of 14, 18 and 24, to punchy sizes of 12, 14, 18. Our cymbals are big and resonant, with a 22” Constantinople ride, 20” K custom dark crash, and 16” K sweet hats. These won’t fit every style, but they do provide excellent sounds in the rock, alternative, folk, and vintage-inspired sounds that Big Horse Recordings targets. If you have a kit and cymbals that you prefer, we highly encourage you to bring them and we will mic it up to record your kit at its best.
